Pam Murotsune

Group affiliation:

Pam Murotsune was a performing member with San Jose Taiko for 11 years, beginning her training with the group in 1998. That same year she started teaching taiko to the Dharma School students at the Palo Alto Buddhist Temple, and continues to do so. During her time with SJT, Pam was also an instructor at the Summer Taiko Camp at Stanford, and since 2000, she also helped instruct SJT's adult recreational taiko classes. Music has essentially been a part of Pam's entire life, beginning with piano lessons starting at the age of 3. She earned a BMus and an MA, both with an emphasis in piano performance. Pam began teaching traditional piano lessons in 1978, and since 1990 has also been teaching using the Suzuki method. The Suzuki method, which introduces music through listening and rote instruction, is very similar to the way taiko is taught. It also incorporates group classes, during which various games may be used to help reinforce musical concepts. With a few modifications, many of these games are suitable for taiko classes as well.
